Knox County Schools (KCS) includes thirteen high schools and fourteen middle schools offering opportunities for student participation on athletic teams.  The middle schools participate in basketball, track and field, and cheerleading.  The high school program consists of seventeen varsity teams per school competing in eleven sports in addition to cheerleading.

Each high school has an athletic director who supervises and administers the local school athletic program.  All coaches are hired at the local school level.  Prospective coaches should read our New Coaches page for information and then contact the local high school athletic director for specific vacancies.  All high schools are members of Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA).

The interscholastic sports programs offer an opportunity for participation in a variety of activities, which are a vital part of a student’s educational experience.  Participation is a privilege that carries with it responsibilities to the school, sport, other students, the community, and to the athletes themselves.Participation in interscholastic sports in the Knox County School System is entirely voluntary.  The opportunity to participate is extended to all eligible students

How athletics schedules/calendars throughout the system function:

It is a tremendous task to keep track of all the athletic events at all 13 high schools and 14 middle schools. Each sport may have a boys and a girls team, a varsity and junior varsity and more. That adds up to a very large number of individual teams, each with their own schedule.

Games or matches may be canceled and/or rescheduled. Parents, fans, and team members need to be notified of the changes.

Team Schedules:
Each team at every middle and high school has a "team site" on their school's website. The team's individual website has its own schedule. Members (and parents) of the team may automatically receive changes via email to the team's schedule. If a game is canceled for any reason or rescheduled, the team members and parents are notified.

All the team's coach has to do is update the event on the team's schedule online. It is available immediately.

School athletic Calendars:

Each middle and high school has a school-wide athletics calendar. This school-wide athletics calendar automatically pulls team schedules and changes into the school's master athletic calendar.

Again, all the coach must do is make sure the team schedule is updated as needed.

The District Athletic Calendar:

Assuming that coaches maintain an accurate online schedules by making changes and/or additions, the link at the top of this announcement will combine ALL 13 high schools and 14 middle school athletic calendars into one source.

The online calendar can be customized by the user to show any date(s) desired; viewed weekly, daily, monthly; can be searched for school names, sports, etc.
